John P McD Smith was born on 26 November 1946 as the first and only child of Percy McDonald Smith and Isabel Elizabeth Smith (nee Almond). John was the inaugural Chair of the St Francis' House Project and was a prolific writer, including the biography of his father, The Flower in the Desert. His final article was published on 5 December 2022: Click Here to read. He passed away in Adelaide on 15 November 2022 aged 75 and was the beloved husband of Fe Dagaraga Smith from 6 December 1980, and was father of Mark and Stephen. His funeral service was held on Saturday 10 December 2022 at the famous St Peter's Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide, and the magnificent landmark that has made Adelaide known worldwide as the city of churches. The service was taken by the Dean of the Cathedral, the Rt Rev Chris McLeod who was baptised by Father Percy Smith in 1963, was godson of John P McD Smith and is also the National Aboriginal Bishop of the Anglican Church. Eulogies were delivered by Phillip Sunman, Leonie Wanklyn, Terry Cleary, former St Francis House boy, Dr Gordon Briscoe AO and Mark Smith. Messages of condolence were read by Madhavi Nawana Parker and the Gospel reading was delivered by Heather Kurtz.
